Launch Night and We Couldn’t Stop the Feeling!
Wow. What an incredible evening. I will hold my hands up and say I felt extremely nervous about running my very first class, but by the end of the evening I felt so excited and elated by the whole experience. We welcomed a very excitable bunch of learners; some with little to no prior exposure of sign language and some who had studied up to Level 2 BSL. We also welcomed a deaf lady who attended along with her Mum, both of whom were BSL users.
We started the evening with an icebreaker; Wayne and I headed up 2 teams for the famous balloon race, this was a simple, quick and easy game to get us all interacting and warmed up (it also revealed both mine and Wayne’s competitive sides!)
I decided to choose a really catchy, upbeat song for our first class to demonstrate how much fun can be had whilst learning a new language! So we launched our Manchester classes by learning Justin Timberlake’s ‘Can’t Stop the Feeling’. We started by reading through the lyrics and learning how the songs translated into sign language and I was amazed at how quickly everyone picked up the signs.
I was happy to see that everyone was really getting involved. I wanted our learners to understand that when we sign along to a song, it’s important to show the tone and emotion of the song through how we perform the signs and use our facial expressions i.e. if it’s a happy song, let’s show that we are enjoying ourselves! I was delighted at how well everybody took this on board, and we certainly did enjoy ourselves!
By the end of the evening everyone had learnt the entire song, everyone was up on their feet dancing and signing along and the atmosphere in the room was just incredible. I was delighted to see how happy all of our learners were that they could learn an entire song in just 1 hour, and really have fun with it too. We received such overwhelming, positive feedback and I personally cannot wait for the next class to see what else you lovely lot are capable of!
